Surf Lessons in Ahangama, Sri Lanka
Ahangama — a small coastal town between Galle and Weligama on the Southern Expressway — is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn to surf. Three distinct breaks within walking distance cater to every level, and private coaching here costs a fraction of what you'd pay in Bali or Portugal.

The Surf Spots
Kabalana Beach
BeginnerBeach break · sand bottom
The ideal starting point. Kabalana has forgiving white water, a soft sand bottom with zero reef risk, and is completely separated from the advanced breaks. Almost every beginner lesson starts here. If you have never surfed before, this is your spot.
✓ First-timers and absolute beginners
Marshmallows
Beginner–IntermediateReef break · 2m deep
A mellow, long-walled reef break producing left and right rides of 50–150m. The reef sits 2 metres below the surface — shallow enough to feel, deep enough to be forgiving. Once you can consistently catch white water, this is where progression really accelerates.

The Rock
Intermediate–AdvancedReef break · technical
A heavier, more powerful reef break for surfers who already have turns and can handle a more critical take-off. Not suitable for beginners. Farsan can take experienced students here when conditions are right.

What Happens in a Lesson
Farsan adapts to each student. A typical beginner session covers beach theory first — paddling technique, pop-up mechanics, wave reading — then moves straight into the water. He stays in alongside you, positioning you on waves and correcting your stance in real time. The session doesn't end on a timer. It ends when you get that clean ride.
"100% of 200+ beginner students caught their first unbroken green wave within their first or second session." — tracked via guest WhatsApp feedback, 2018–2024.
Getting There
Ahangama sits on the A2 coastal highway approximately 100km south of Colombo (about 2 hours by highway) and 15km east of Galle. Tuk-tuks from Galle or Weligama are cheap and easy. Most surf-focused guesthouses in the area are within a 10-minute walk of Kabalana Beach.
